If you have ever read the back of one of our jars, you know the ingredient list is short. Popcorn kernels, coconut oil, seasoning. That is the whole list, and the coconut oil is not there by accident. It is a choice we made in our Brooklyn kitchen before POPRUS was a business at all, and it is the same choice we make for every small batch we hand-pop today.
It handles the heat
Popping corn needs real heat. The kernel has to get hot enough for the moisture inside to turn to steam and burst the hull, and the oil in the pot is what carries that heat evenly to every kernel. Coconut oil holds up well at popping temperatures, so the kernels pop big and round without the oil breaking down or tasting burnt. Because we pop in small batches and watch every pot, the pop comes out even from the first kernel to the last.
It keeps our popcorn dairy-free
A lot of popcorn gets its flavor from butter, and butter means dairy. We wanted POPRUS to be a popcorn everyone at the table could eat. Coconut oil gives the popcorn a rich, satisfying taste with no dairy at all. Even our Butter flavor is completely dairy-free - the buttery taste comes from our seasoning, not from actual butter. That matters to families keeping kosher, to anyone who avoids dairy, and to any parent packing a snack without wanting to read a label twice.
It is part of being kosher parve
Every batch we make is certified kosher parve under the Vaad HaKashrus of Tarnopol. Parve means the popcorn has no milk and no meat ingredients, so it fits alongside any meal. Popping in coconut oil instead of butter or other fats is a big part of how we keep that promise, batch after batch.
It just tastes better
Here is the part we care about most. Coconut oil gives mushroom popcorn a clean, slightly sweet backdrop that lets the seasoning do its job. Shawarma tastes like shawarma. Salt & Pepper tastes like salt and pepper. The oil is there to carry the heat and hold the seasoning on the kernel, not to shout over it. And because we never use preservatives, what you taste is what came out of the pot.
From our family to yours
We are a small family business in Brooklyn, and we pop the way we would for our own kids: simple ingredients, small batches, no shortcuts. If you want to taste what coconut oil popping does for a dairy-free popcorn, our Butter Popcorn Jar is the one we reach for at our own Friday night table.
